A region best discovered slowly — coastal roads, hidden beaches, historic towns and a slower pace of life.
Messinia is not a place that reveals itself all at once. Surrounded by olive groves, crystal-clear waters, historic towns, and landscapes shaped by centuries of tradition, it offers a side of Greece that remains authentic, unhurried, and deeply connected to nature. Most visitors leave remembering the feeling of a place where life still moves at its own pace.
It is a region best discovered slowly, through winding coastal roads, long lunches beneath the shade of village squares, hidden beaches found by chance, and conversations with people who have called this land home for generations. Whether exploring by sea, walking ancient paths, discovering local flavours, or simply watching the sunset from a quiet taverna by the water, Messinia invites you to slow down.
Finikounda is a seaside village in the municipal unit of Pylos-Nestor, Messinia, on the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese — 9 km east of Methoni and 37 km southwest of Kalamata. It is most notable for its beautiful beaches, which attract Greek and other European visitors throughout the summer months.
It is believed to have been founded by the Phoenicians; the ancient town of Phoenicus was mentioned by Pausanias as a port west of Cape Akritas. Each of the three long sandy beaches in Finikounda has been rated a Blue Flag beach.
